How you make people feel

Meeting with Polina yesterday was incredible for me as we first met in Kindergarten at Kambala in 1983! We carried our little brown suitcases, wearing our little grey uniforms together into the very first day of our school years. There were actually two other Class of ’95 SGHS students in that kindergarten class, but I have covered all other faces out of respect.

We remained friends for a few years in the 80’s and I used to live just a few hundred metres down the road from where Polina lives today. It was nostalgic for me to remember travelling that road as a 7 year old, as I travelled along it yesterday.

My car parked just a few 100 metres from where I lived at age 7.

Polina wanted to be a vet, got into vet science and found out it was right for her. Now that’s unique. I know for myself I am still figuring out what I want to do!

Polina strikes a beautiful balance between work and family, she gives back to the community and is incredibly thoughtful as a parent.

It’s always a pleasure to see someone who has vision, the capability and determination to carry it out and the emotional intelligence to understand what others need.

I don’t want to paint a picture that Polina’s life is perfect or without it’s challenges. She’s had and has her fair share of struggle with some of the same things I’ve discussed with others in this series – perfectionism, learning not to burn the candle at both ends, parenting and facing the questions of mid-life.

But I can honestly say, from my perspective, she does life with admirable grace. And it felt just as fun for me to be around her as it felt 40 years ago. Polina has since said she felt relaxed.

This recording reminded me of the Maya Angelou quote “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
